‘Raise the Volume’
I live by one motto: “No day should ever be about me, rather, how can I make a difference in the life of one person each day”. In this fast paced, electronic world of communication it can be very easy to get caught in the back draft of this out of control and self centered generation. The noise of day to day living has gone to an all time decibel high. A volume so loud that people around us are literally screaming for help, and yet they are not being heard. How do we raise the Volume? Statistics. What actually are statistics? Numbers quoted on a daily basis, regarding everything under the sun from the amount of population in a given area, to revenue generated, homelessness, childhood hunger, displaced veterans etc. According to an article in Business Insider, Mark Suster stated, ‘there are even statics about the accuracy of Statistics. 73.6% Of All Statistics Are Made Up.’ As a result of the overload of statistics quoted, we often forget that those numbers actually representation something or someone.
December 1999, the Orlando Sentinel ran a 6 week series titled “The Poor Children of Lake Co.Florida”. This series was powerful and touched a chord in my heart. After all, how can I live in Lake County and not know that children around me are suffering from hunger? My husband and I went into action mode. We gathered our children, placed them into their car seats and began a driving trip in search of those behind the numbers quoted in the paper. Sadly I report that the need was far closer than ever imagined. Only 3 miles from our home, behind the grocery store where we often frequent. We found what looked to be a third world country. People living in homes so run down that plastic was used to replace windows, doors were simply a crude piece of plywood and bare foot children playing in the dirt street. The need, while clearly in sight, seemed invisible. That very day we could place a face to what many only saw as a number. Our hearts were called to action. We founded “The Good Neighbor Program” in 1999. Now, 17 years later, God has used us to team together the community with time, talent and resources to make a Forever difference in the lives of our neighbors in need. We are a not for profit organization but NOT a 501c3. We have not, do not and will not accept financial donations of any size. We simply team PEOPLE together to help neighbors in need. The homeless have been rescued, thousands have been handed new blankets, children have been fed, homes have been built and lives have been changed.
Like ‘The Good Neighbor Program’, LOLC is teaming people together to ‘Turn up the Volume’ in hopes that those around us will HEAR the cries of the deeply Broken. Hear and see statistic quoted on Suicide are not simply a number rather each number represents a person who no longer could see the light at the end of the dark tunnel. Why do I feel passion about LOLC? I have a few very personal stories of loved ones l lost in the deepest despair. Here is one of my stories:
Choosing a name for your child is always a monumental task. Sure, the name you choose for your baby will be a defining piece of his or her identity for a lifetime. So no pressure, right? Sadly in our case with our son, the name was given as a tribute to the medical Doctor who saved my life. Dr. Gregory was a brilliantly gifted diagnostician and because of him that I am alive today. While Dr. Gregory saved my life, sadly no one knew that he needed a voice to speak HOPE to him and Save his very own life. At 42 years old, in a dark moment of despair, my 'Real life hero', took a gun to his head leaving a hole in my heart and in this world that no one can fill. Our son Gregory is named after this very special man. Far beyond the tribute to Dr. Gregory, I use this tragedy to speak HOPE to those who are so deeply broken that they cannot see Sunrise is only moments away.
I am asking you to link arms with me adding our voices to the powerful choir that is holding the LOLC microphone. Together, we can Raise the Volume!
